Make.com pricing: Free tier includes 1,000 operations per month. Core plan starts at $9/month for 10,000 operations. Pro plan at $16/month adds features like full-text log search and priority execution. For most small businesses, the Pro plan provides sufficient volume. At high scale (100,000+ operations per month), costs grow linearly and can become significant.
Make.com limitations: You are limited to what the platform supports. If an integration does not exist and the HTTP module is not sufficient, you are stuck. Data processing at very high volumes can hit platform limits. And all your data flows through Make.com’s cloud servers — which matters for businesses with strict data handling requirements.
n8n: The Developer-Friendly Powerhouse
n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform that prioritizes flexibility, self-hosting, and developer control. It is the platform we choose for complex AI agent workflows and data-sensitive operations.
Where n8n excels:
Self-hosting is n8n’s defining advantage. You run n8n on your own infrastructure — a $10/month DigitalOcean droplet, a Railway deployment, or your own server rack. Your data never leaves your network. For law firms processing client documents, healthcare practices handling patient records, financial services firms managing transaction data, and any business with serious compliance requirements, this is not a nice-to-have — it is a necessity. Self-hosting also eliminates per-operation pricing. Whether you run 1,000 or 1,000,000 operations per month, your cost is the same flat infrastructure fee.
Developer flexibility is the second major advantage. n8n allows custom JavaScript or Python code at any step in a workflow. Need a custom data transformation? Write it inline. Need to integrate with an internal API that no platform supports? Build a custom node. For AI workflows specifically, n8n provides native LangChain integration with built-in AI agent nodes — tool use, memory, multi-step reasoning, and vector database connections are all available out of the box.
n8n pricing: Self-hosted is free forever (you pay only for your server, typically $5-20/month). n8n Cloud starts at $20/month for the managed version with 2,500 executions. Enterprise plans add SSO, audit logs, and priority support.
n8n limitations: The learning curve is steeper than Make.com, especially for non-technical users. The integration library is smaller (400+ versus Make.com’s 1,500+), though the HTTP request node and custom code capabilities close most gaps. The UI, while functional, is less polished than Make.com’s visual builder.
Head-to-Head: What Actually Matters
Ease of use — Make.com wins. The visual builder is more intuitive, onboarding is faster, and non-technical team members can manage workflows independently. If your marketing manager or office administrator needs to monitor and adjust automations, Make.com is the better choice.
AI capabilities — n8n wins. Native LangChain integration, built-in AI agent nodes, custom code flexibility for prompt engineering, and the ability to run local AI models make n8n the stronger platform for sophisticated AI workflows. Make.com can call AI APIs, but n8n provides deeper AI-native tooling.
Data privacy — n8n wins decisively. Self-hosting means complete data control. For businesses in legal, healthcare, financial services, or any regulated industry, this is often the deciding factor.
Integration breadth — Make.com wins on quantity (1,500+ versus 400+). In practice, n8n’s HTTP request nodes and custom code mean you can connect to anything — it just requires more setup time.
Cost at scale — n8n wins. Self-hosted n8n eliminates per-operation costs entirely. Make.com’s operation-based pricing scales linearly, and high-volume workflows (50,000+ operations per month) can cost $100-300+ per month.
Reliability and monitoring — Make.com wins. The execution log, visual error indicators, and built-in retry mechanisms make it easier to monitor production workflows and catch issues quickly.
When to Use Which — Our Honest Recommendations
Choose Make.com when:
- Your team is non-technical and needs to manage workflows independently
- You are building your first AI automations and want fast time-to-value
- Your workflows primarily connect common business tools (CRM, email, calendar, accounting)
- Monthly operation volume stays under 50,000
- Ease of monitoring and debugging is a priority
Choose n8n when:

- You are building complex AI agent workflows with custom logic
- You have development resources (in-house or through a partner like AI PROFI)
- Volume is high and predictable costs matter
- You need custom integrations for niche or internal tools
Use both (our most common recommendation): Many businesses run Make.com for client-facing automations — appointment booking, lead response, social media scheduling — where reliability, monitoring, and ease of management are paramount. They run n8n for internal AI workflows — document processing, data analysis, custom AI agents — where flexibility, data control, and cost efficiency matter more. This hybrid approach gives you the best of both platforms.

Make.com gets you to results faster. n8n gives you more power and control. Neither is universally “better” — the right choice depends on your specific business needs, technical resources, and compliance requirements.
